What is a family doctor and what should you expect from your family doctor in the 21st century? While the scope of modern medicine has generally precluded the existence of the old “GP” who provided 100% of your care from cradle to grave, the role of the modern family practitioner is actually quite clear. A well-trained and competent family physician should be able to diagnosis and treat 90% of the problems he is faced with and be smart enough to guide you to the proper resources to care for the other 10%. Your family doctor should know which consultants are most appropriate for your condition in order to expedite a referral. Your family doctor should help you decide at which medical facility to seek secondary or tertiary care as sometimes a community hospital may well be more appropriate than a major medical center. Your family doctor should be your ombudsman in dealing with the sometimes impersonal world of the specialized medical centers and serve as the liaison between you and your specialty physicians in helping you to understand medications, laboratory and test results, and when appropriate providing specialty care locally under the auspices of the specialty physician or institution. We at the Kelsey Medical Center hope to embody the above characteristics of a family physician and encourage open communication between the doctor and the patient as a best means to provide quality medical care. | ![]() David P.
